Navigating life’s challenges can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to face them alone. Harrys Helping Hands offer compassionate counselling, support, supervision, mediation, education & training. We aim to help move your mental health and wellbeing up the top end of the mental health continuum, to guide you in overcoming life obstacles and to begin healing from past wounds to create a brighter future.
Mental Health Continuum

Mental health affects how we think, feel and act which in turn affects our everyday lives inclusive of home, work, relationships and education. Here at Harrys Helping Hands we actively talk about the importance of looking after our social and emotional wellbeing along with keeping our body healthy. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health and they both work hand in hand.
We recognise how difficult it can be to talk about our mental health and that a lot of people feel uncomfortable with the topic. The mental health continuum can help with speaking about where you are sitting with your social and emotional wellbeing. It can give you the words to describe how you are feeling at any given moment and to ask others the same. It also helps with the steps of how to look after your mental health right now and what to pay attention to.
The continuum is good to use as our mental health can change gradually over time and we want to keep on top of seeking support as needed.
We all have days when we feel better than others but just like our physical health we can all do things that make us mentally healthier. Reaching out for support and guidance is a great step. We want to pay attention to the signs our body is giving us and don’t want to leave it until we are ill to start thinking about our mental health.
Excelling
is the highest level of mental wellbeing and has us functioning at our peak level. A time of great joy or fulfilment or performing at our fullest potential. It is worth thinking about how we can be encouraged to get into this excelling zone and to stay there and we are here to help this happen.
Thriving
a normal, healthy state of mental health where you feel calm and content, not necessarily completely free from troubles but your worries and annoyances are coped with well and don’t make you feel too unsettled in the long term.
Surviving
is an unsettled state of mind where a person is not in a severe state of distress but it indicates problems could get worse and you can easily slip down the continuum so requires action. Worries prey on the minds more than usual and thoughts may be more negative. You could feel on edge without knowing why.
Struggling
here is where we are significantly troubled. We may feel so much anxiety that life is hard and becomes a misery. Mood may be so low that it is difficult to do anything well. Concentration is poor, energy is low and we are suffering. We may feel pain both emotional and physical or may feel numb and empty. Thoughts may be of worthlessness.
In Crisis
Unfortunately there is a state of mental health beyond struggling and people with diagnosed mental health conditions may have found themselves in this zone in the past which has led to their diagnosis and treatment. This person is in a state of great suffering and needs immediate help. Their emotional pain is unbearable and can include severe anxiety and depression or both. There will be difficult with everything and often they feel ashamed of their condition. Unfortunately, they could be experiencing suicide ideation and plans of taking their own life. Serious steps need to be taken to make sure the person remains safe.
If they seem at immediate risk of suicide, stay with them and call mental health services or the police. Make sure there are no dangerous items around which they could use to harm themselves. Two important things to remember are:
- talking to someone about their suicidal thoughts does not make them more likely to end their life
- you can help someone who is feeling suicidal by listening, without judging them.
